What will the workshop consist of ?

Each workshop is tailored to your needs, but it's usually something like this ...
1. Introduction
A brief introduction of the speaker and the topics to be covered. A bit of a warm up and survey of what type of things people would like to learn.
2. Teaching methods and motivation techniques.
This is not the usual textbook English! Learn ways to make your kids have fun, like English and become really excited about all the possibilities English offers! How to make your kids quiet, or loud, curing katakana accents, getting them motivated and wanting to speak more!
3. Genki English Games and Songs
Introductions of tried and tested, fun games, songs and activities to get the kids interested in English, and the World. You'll be playing these games as well, so you get to see for yourself just how fun and effective they are!
4. Question, Answers and Discussion. I'm here to help.
Many teachers will have questions about how to teach such material. Hopefully the I'll be able to answer any questions you may have, and help you out with any problems! Ask questions at any time, at the end, over a beer in the evening or even by email when you get back home.

English will play a vital role in the lives and success of your students in the 21st Century. This workshop will give you  the tools and confidence to make sure your students fulfill their potential! I'm determined to make teaching English and International Understanding as effective and fun as possible.

Go on, please get in touch today!

English Workshops

Are you looking for new ideas? Need help teaching certain things? Or would you just like a fun packed, highly motivating workshop to get you back enjoying your job to the max?

It sounds like a Genki English Workshop is just for you!

I have done workshops for 1000s of teachers around the world, at events sponsored by Oxford University Press, JALT, the British Council, Ministries of Education, Boards of Educations and many schools in Japan, Thailand, Korea & Europe. They have been featured in national newspapers and on TV in many countries. But most of my time is spent travelling to towns just like yours, helping teachers to get a little more genkiness into their classes.

There are several types of workshop I can do, please choose which is best for you, and get in touch.

If you'd like to see what sort of things we'll do, have a look at the Online Video Workshops.

Or click here to see this year's schedule.

Aims of the workshop
To make life easier for you by solving your teaching problems and showing dozens of original, effective & fun activities for teaching kids.

Where will the workshops be held?In your town or city. Usually Asia is in the Summer and Europe in the Winter season.

Who will lead the workshops?
The workshop will be taught by a Genki English Education Consultant who has many years of experience in teacher training as well as planning and teaching lessons in primary schools (probably me!).  The workshop can be conducted in either Japanese, English or French. And believe me, you'll never have seen a workshop quite as Genki as this!

How long will the workshop last?
A very basic introduction can last 2-3 hours. A more thorough presentation including question and answer time will consist of 3 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon. 2 or 3 day workshops are also possible where smaller groups of teachers get to teach and critique themselves.

How much will the workshop cost?
The main aim of Genki English is improving education in elementary schools. Because of this we have special programmes where workshops at elementary schools have no fee for the presentation. All that is required is travel expenses and accommodation. For groups of private teachers we also have special schemes available, please see the examples below.

GenkiEnglish.com Curriculum / Lesson Plans

The basic outline of Genki English is ...

Step 1.
Songs & Games
to learn the English

Step 2.
Put the English to use in real projects!

Click for a few words about step 1 ...

  • The aim of Genki English is to get the kids able to say * anything they want to say * in English, in as short a period of time as possible. We do that using the themes below.
  • The themes were chosen by researching hundreds and hundreds of kids and finding out what theywant to say. ( But the curriculum is also now used to teach many adults as they find the course much more fun than traditional textbooks.)
  • If you are teaching in a normal elementary, junior high or private English school then I would recommend using these lessons as the main base of your course.
  • If you have a set textbook that you can't change, then use the lessons below as a "spice" to liven up your classes. e.g. Hi Friends!
  • The lessons are presented in a thought out way that allows for plenty of review and a balance between topics that are very easy and those that may present a bit of a challenge. However the curriculum is mostly non-linear in format, so please feel free to mix and match, and change the order as much as you like. All classes are different and it is very important to mold the curriculum to the children's interests and abilities, not the other way round.
  • The songs & software are the reason this programme has become so successful. They allow you to teach a theme very quickly (as you have a solid goal) and the students can then use the material to review everyday, even if you are not present. e.g. at home, on the lunchtime broadcasts, morning assembly or cleaning time.
  • Reviewing of the material is very important. Review the previous lessons at the beginning of each new lesson by using the previous song. Plus I always leave room for lessons that are purely for review.
  • Each lessons consists of one English question and several answers to the question. Questions, rather than statements, are what children most usually want to communicate. The quantity of material allows a full theme to be taught, with a bit of practice, in one 45 minute lesson.
  • Each lesson should be broken down into the following sections:
    • 1. Warm up/Review (3-5 minutes)
    • 2. Introduction of new English (15-20 minutes), including teaching of the song. Use this 3 step approach to keep kids interest and energy levels high.
      • a) introduce new vocab
      • b) teach song a cappella with the "Mini Lesson"
      • c) sing together with the music,
    • 3. Practice of new material (15-20 minutes)
    • (See the "planning a fun 45 minute lesson" page for more details)
  • And of course all the lessons are designed to be lots of fun!

Needless to say it takes quite a bit of time to get to step 2.
But keep it in the back of your mind as we start with ....

"Genki Disco Warm Up"
by Richard Graham

Stand up, sit down.
Hands up, hands down.
Stand up, and bow.
Sit down, sit down.

And clap.

Stand up, sit down.
Hands up, hands down.
Stand up, and bow.
Sit down. Sit down.

And cheer!
Come on, louder!

Stand up, sit down.
Hands up, hands down.
Stand up, and bow.
Sit down, sit down.

And cheer!

Genki Disco Warm Up Extended Mix

Stand up, sit down.
Hands up, hands down.
Stand up, and bow.
Sit down, sit down.

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle your nose.
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle your toes.
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle your cheeks.
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle your ears.
And clap!

(Repeat Chorus)

Shake, shake, shake your head.
Shake, shake, shake your hands.
Shake, shake, shake your arms.
Shake, shake, shake your legs.

And cheer!
Come on, louder!

(Repeat Chorus)

And cheer!
How to teach ...
Simply stand up, sit down etc. after the music. "Sit down" is repeated twice on purpose, on the second one you raise your hands, just to make sure the kids are listening and not just copying your movements! As usual do the song without the music at first, then bring in the CD to bring the class to life.

In the "clap" and "cheer" section raise your hand and the kids raise their volume. Do this a few times and you'll be able to quieted the kids down at will by simply lowering your arms. I use this in lessons of even 100s of kids and it works a treat.

There's also an Extended Remix version with extra lyrics, simply shake or wiggle the appropriate body parts. "Wiggle your ears" is always a good one!

You can either do the strict TPR ( Total Physical Response) way of doing this, which is to just have the kids do the actions without speaking. But if you only have one lesson a week or less, I'd really recommend getting the kids to say the actions out loud as they do them, it gets them used to speaking out loud, lets you check their pronunciation and raises the atmosphere of the class no end.

See for yourself ...

To see how well this works with your children, try teaching yourself some Japanese with the same song!
Be warned it will stick in your head!

How to Teach English Conversation Class

How to Teach English: Tips for Teaching Private or Group Conversational EFL/ESL Classes

Be Prepared: even for a purely conversational class, at minimum bring a pen and paper (to write down mistakes) and some conversation topics. While sometimes a conversation will flow organically from 'What's new?' into something interesting, it's good to have a list of about four or five interesting questions for when there is a lull in the conversation. Having a dictionary can also be helpful.

Don't Talk Too Much: although some students are happy listening to their teacher's wonderful English, they can do this at home with a DVD. In class, keep your talk time down and aim to have the student(s) do 70% of the speaking. Ask open-ended questions instead of Yes/No questions. Use a "Tell me more" approach. In group settings, have students talk together, while you play the role of a moderator. Guide the conversation without becoming the focus of it.

Balance Your Correction: use a combination of correcting students as they speak and writing down their errors on paper. Too much correction when the student is speaking can be discouraging and disrupt the flow of conversation. If the student is making many errors, note the major mistakes on paper while listening. Review the mistakes at the end of the conversation.

Don't Be Afraid to Say You Don't Know: if you can't answer a tough grammar question, tell the students you'll look into it and get back to them. Students will appreciate your effort and honesty. You will also benefit as a teacher by learning about what you can't already explain confidently.

Review: the problem with no-textbook conversation classes is the lack of structure. Topics change each week and students quickly forget what was previously covered. To alleviate this problem, review the most important mistakes/vocab/pronunciation issues from the previous lesson at the beginning of the next class. If you're already noting down the student's mistakes in class, have him/her keep these notes and bring them next class so you can review them. After a certain number of classes, make a quiz on all past key language items. (You can also ask the student to make sentences with the new vocabulary items in the notes as homework.)
Care: students enjoy class more if they feel you are interested in what they say. English class can have therapeutic value because it gives students the opportunity to speak with someone who actually listens. While being attentive as a teacher, be supportive and understanding as a human being.
